stress management quote:The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.-William James |
Laughter – funny what it can do for youWhy Laugh?"Laughter is the best medicine". We all know it.Studies prove it time and time again: laughter releases endorphines that make us feel good. It also lowers the level of stress hormones.
When do we need laughter the most? When we're stressed. And what do we feel like doing at such times? Certainly not laughing. Let's face it – when we're stressed, we don't feel like we have a lot to laugh about. A stressed time is the best and most important time to bring laughter and joy into your life. Not only will it raise your spirits, but it is also good for your health. Here are just a few things you could say about laughter:
Laughter can cure diseases. Do you want proof for that? Norman Cousins wrote a book called "Anatomy of an Illness As Perceived by the Patient" where he describes how laughter helped him cure himself. Go ahead and read it to learn more about the subject. All the above benefits are reason enough to make laughter a habit, part of your daily routine.
How to start laughingBegin your day with laughter. How? Just laugh, for no reason. Fake it till you make it. Just laughing, first thing in the morning, makes a good start for the day.Another good opition is watching a comedy series on TV every day. That way, you can guarantee yourself 22 minutes of laughter every day. If you opened your eyes, you'd see that laughter workshops, laughter yoga, and other forms of "organized laughter" are all around you. Why not take advantage of them? You cannot possibly overestimate the importance of laughter to your mood and to your health. That's the reason we have a joke at the end of every newsletter.
Doing some serious laughingSome of us believe that being serious is very important. Being serious will take you where you want to go.But being serious doesn't mean you can't laugh. It only means putting all your heart into doing whatever it is you're doing. It means being fully involved in your actions, being commited. Having a smile on your face doesn't make you less involved – just take one look at the Dalai Lama, at how he smiles and laughs, if you want to understand what being cheerfully serious means. A smile can only make things better. Say "cheese"! |
